Speed sensor Niva 21214. Purpose, repair and replacement

The article was written for the NivaFAQ website.

Goal: share knowledge and experience gained with forum members https://www.niva4x4.ru.

It is known that injection Nivas have a speed sensor, the signals from which are transmitted to the ECU and which is located somewhere on the transfer case. There is not much information with details on this matter, so I decided to make a photo report.

The photo quality is not very good, I took it with my phone because... Naturally, I forgot my camera at home.

First, the symptoms: the ECU never gave a DC error, only an XX high speed error. I had problems with IAC, I described this in another article. However, it turns out that if the ECU produces errors that it considers to be primary, then secondary ones, even if they exist, are simply not issued. Therefore, I did not know about the DS error, because having repaired the IAC, I calmed down with joy. But sometimes, especially when coasting, “Jackie-chan” still got out - it’s summer, there was no time to deal with it. It also happened, especially in the heat, that the idle speed would hang high and stay there. If you gasp, they will fall, but they may not fall. Removing the battery terminal helps.

Then the speedometer cut out. Everything was fine in the tidy - I went to look down. And this is what I saw:

On carburetor Nivas, only the speedometer drive is located on this cover (on the right). And on the injection there is also a speed sensor (on the left).

I don’t know how it is on other Nivas, but on my DS it was installed in a very cunning way. In this cover on the right there is a boss on which there is a thread for the speedometer drive. What prevented the VAZ designers from doing the same is unclear. I have a hole in the lid on the left into which an aluminum bushing adapter is inserted and then the DS is screwed onto this adapter.

In the photo above you can see that the sensor on the left is wired to the speedometer drive. This is because this aluminum adapter is quite easy to pull out of the cover. The tension is very small. And so that he wouldn’t leave and get lost, they tied him up. I don’t know if it should have been like this from the factory or if it was once broken off and restored this way.

Here you can see this adapter:

I turn the lid over and am very surprised:

The gear on the left (DS drive) is heavily eaten by the transfer case drive gear. Apparently, the adapter came out of the cover, the gear did not adhere well - that’s what ate it. The photo on the right shows the old and new gears. I bought a new one at a car store for 40 rubles. no problem.

I decided to bring this matter to fruition. I took out the adapter, washed everything with gasoline, then put the adapter in the lid with Moment water-resistant glue. It stuck tightly. And the fit there is tight, it will be fine.

So I put it on glue:

But that's not the end of the story. When examining the DS, it turned out that it lacks a quadrangular shaft. Broke off.

In general, the DS is designed quite interestingly. One end of it is screwed onto the drive from the transfer case. The wires come out from the side of the sensor. And at the other end there is a cap with a thread. If you unscrew it, there will be the same external thread and the same square hole as on the transfer case drive. Those. you could just screw this sensor into its regular place between the transfer case and the speedometer cable drive and that’s it! There is no need for a second outlet from the transfer case. True, then the structure will become long and may rest somewhere, you need to look at the place. But in general, the sensor is designed competently, I really liked it.

My sensor, when I tried to twist it by the rectangular hole, rotated very tightly and made a sandy scraping sound. In general, he died. And, apparently, having jammed, it broke off its square shaft.

I did not find such a sensor. I have a round connector with round pins.

The photo shows a similar sensor, but there are flat contacts in the connector. Well, there is no second shank, which is unimportant (https://avtopasker.ru/goods/13944.htm).

Then I bought this one for only 130 rubles. and a block for it for 45 rubles:

I cut off a chip from my old sensor, connected the old and new chips 1 to 1. I screwed the sensor into place and connected everything. While the flight is normal, the car has stopped twitching (seemingly), as if from a wiped TPS, “Jackie-chan” doesn’t seem to come out.

I believe that the half-erased gear could be dangling, now coming into gear, now leaving it, and therefore glitches with freezing high speeds XX and “Jackie Chan” in the coasting appeared and then disappeared.

Purpose of the device.

A speedometer is installed on the Niva's instrument panel, which is necessary to display the current speed of the car. In the event of a malfunction, driving becomes difficult as most roads have speed limits that must be followed. In addition, a malfunction of the speedometer can affect the calculation of other data by the on-board computer. Based on the DS data, the required fuel consumption is determined and gasoline savings are ensured while idling.

Therefore, it is necessary to carry out diagnostics as soon as possible and identify the cause of the breakdown.

The reason is the sensor

In principle, this is one of the few speedometer malfunctions that you can try to find and fix yourself. Not counting the jammed arrow and the torn cable. All other problems, including those with the electronic control unit and digital display, are best resolved at specialized service stations.

The first sign of a speed controller failure will be the speedometer stopping or its readings being incorrect. But the fact that the speedometer has stopped working due to the speed sensor can be determined by other signs:

  1. The engine constantly stalls when idling. This does not depend on whether the car is standing or rolling.
  2. The car cannot accelerate due to loss of power.
  3. Fuel consumption in all driving modes has increased sharply.

The reason that a faulty sensor affects engine performance so much is that it is included not only in the speedometer circuitry, but also in other systems.

You can check the functionality of this device using a voltmeter. It is more convenient to do this if you remove the sensor. But you can check it in its original place, without dismantling it. In any case, you need to gain access to his contacts. On a working sensor, the voltage readings will increase along with the increase in the rotation speed of its axis.

For your information. Rotation of the sensor core, which has not been removed from the vehicle, can be achieved by turning the suspended drive wheel.

Before checking and changing the sensor, which breaks quite rarely, you need to make sure the contacts are reliable. Often the problem lies in their oxidation or excessive contamination, since most Niva cars are operated in extreme conditions. Typically, the problem with a non-working speed sensor is solved after checking each contact, cleaning them and lubricating them with a protective compound.

Location.

On Niva DS is installed on the gearbox. This allows data to be read only while driving, turning off when the engine is in neutral.

The device itself consists of a plastic case, inside of which electronic components are located. For proper operation, it is placed in close proximity to the shaft. There is a built-in magnetic bar inside the shaft that creates electrical signals when rotated.

The product is quite fragile, so when dismantling or installing you must be extremely careful not to damage its body.

21.13.2. Removing the flexible speedometer drive shaft

We carry out the work on an inspection ditch or a lift.

We remove the flexible speedometer drive shaft to replace it.

Using pliers, unscrew the union nut of the flexible shaft of the speedometer drive.

...and disconnect the speedometer drive from the transfer case.

Remove the oil deflector washer (so that it does not get lost).

We move the instrument cluster away from the instrument panel (see Removing the instrument cluster).

Disconnect the speedometer drive from the instrument cluster.

We pull the flexible shaft into the cabin. When installing a new flexible shaft, we do not allow it to bend with a radius of less than 100 mm.

Checking the sensors.

In order to check the DC, you need to have a multimeter, then follow a certain procedure:

  1. Turn off the sensor.
  2. We connect the red (positive) probe to the DC contact.
  3. We connect the black (negative) probe to ground.
  4. We fix a tube of suitable diameter onto the shaft in order to be able to rotate it.
  5. We switch the multimeter switch to low voltage measurement mode.
  6. It is necessary to rotate the shaft and observe the readings: as the speed increases, the readings on the multimeter display will increase. If the readings do not change, the sensor is faulty.

Another method does not require removing the sensor. To do this, you need to jack up one wheel so that it is at a distance from the ground and can rotate freely. After this, you need to connect a multimeter to the DC connectors. You need to rotate the wheel and observe the readings of the device. A change in voltage will also indicate performance.

Replacement.

To remove the DS, you need to place the car on a level surface. After this, it is best to disconnect the battery terminals to avoid errors in the BC.

Disconnect the wire terminals; to do this, press the plastic lock on the block. After this, use a wrench to unscrew the sensor from its seat. If you cannot unscrew it immediately, it is not recommended to use excessive force. You need to treat the threaded connection with WD-40, wait a few minutes and continue dismantling.

Installation of a new DS is carried out in the reverse order. When purchasing a new part, you need to pay attention to the external condition: the contacts must be treated with a sufficient amount of varnish, as this protects them from moisture. After completing the work, it is necessary to reset the on-board computer errors in order to remove the CHECK ENGINE error.

Replacing the Niva speedometer cable

We will show you visual photo and video instructions on how to replace the speedometer cable on a Niva VAZ 2121 car with your own hands.

We lift the car on a lift or drive into the inspection hole. From below, using pliers, unscrew the nut that holds the cable:

After unscrewing the nut, the cause of the speedometer malfunction was determined; a wire in the cable was torn. We will pull out the old cable from underneath. Let's disassemble the instrument panel:

The panel was broken and he screwed the screws away from himself. Unscrew the speedometer mounting nut in the instrument panel:

We bring the cable down through this hole in the floor:

We insert the new cable from the bottom up, remove the protective cap and screw it on.

Attention! As a rule, a new cable from a store is sold without lubricant; in our conditions, it does not work for a long time and rots after a couple of years. Be sure to pull it out and add your own lubricant, 24 Litol would be ideal. Nigrol cannot be used; in winter it freezes and becomes like plasticine.

Interchangeability of Zhiguli and Niva gearboxes

The series of materials on the interchangeability of components and assemblies of Zhiguli cars, begun in No. 6, is continued by the article by M. VOTINOV, designer of the STC VAZ.

(see also the table of interchangeability of transmission parts)

On rear-wheel drive VAZ (Zhiguli) cars of the first years of production, the same gearbox of the “2101” type was used. It was used for the VAZ-2101, “2102” models (until 1978 they were equipped with boxes without reverse light switches), as well as “21011”, “21013”, “2103”. In 1976, a “2106” type gearbox with different gear ratios appeared. Since 1977, they began to install it on the VAZ-2121-Niva (this version does not have a speedometer drive, since the Niva has it on the transfer case). At the end of 1979, another variety appeared - “2105” with its own series of gear ratios - intermediate between “2101” and “2106”. This is necessary to meet more stringent requirements for efficiency, toxicity, noise of new models - VAZ-2105, “2107”, “2104” and modifications.
