What is a fan switch sensor? Maintenance and replacement of DVV VAZ 2110

The standard fan switch-on sensor is designed to trigger the relay during a period when the temperature of the liquid intended to cool a running motor reaches certain values, above which the engine will overheat.

Often, novice car enthusiasts ask the question where the fan switch on for the VAZ 2110, and other passenger cars, is located. We inform you that such a device is located on the car radiator. This device cannot be repaired and replacing the fan switch sensor if it fails is the only solution.

On the “ten”, however, like on many other cars with liquid cooling of the power plant, an electrically driven climatic fan unit is used to stabilize the operating temperature of the engine. Putting the fan into operating mode, as well as taking it out of this position, takes place automatically, and the fan switch-on sensor serves as a signaling device in case of emergency exceeding of temperature values.

Where is the fan switch on VAZ-2112 16 valves located?

Many experienced car owners have had cases where, due to a malfunction of the fan switch sensor, the car began to boil in hot weather. On modern car models, this indicator has been moved from the left side of the radiator to the head of the block for effective recognition of engine and coolant temperatures. However, many car owners do not know where this sensor is located on the 16-valve VAZ-2112 engine.

Fan sensor - where is it located?

A bimetallic sensor marked TM-108 is installed on a VAZ-2112 car. It is located on the cylinder head on the right near the thermostat. It connects directly to the engine's electronic control unit, where it sends all data on the operating temperature.

Symptoms of failure

Malfunctions that may occur if the sensor stops working:

  • The cooling fan will work constantly - the car will work in emergency mode and a constantly turned on fan can lead to the winding burning out. In this case, the product will have to be changed completely;
  • The cooling fan will not work - the engine will begin to overheat and at a certain point will boil .

Checking the fan motor

The fan will need to be removed. Get to the motor, close it directly and see if the fan works.

How to check the sensor at home

To check the fan switch sensor, you need to unscrew it from its mounting location and close the contacts using a tester. If there is no resistance, then the part is faulty. The same procedure must be done with the wires. It is necessary to close the wires and start the engine. If the fan does not turn on at a temperature of 103 degrees Celsius, then the problem must be looked for elsewhere.

Video: replacing the fan switch sensor

conclusions

A breakdown of the fan activation sensor on a 16-valve VAZ-2112 engine can lead to the fan stopping working, while the engine will cool worse and most likely boil, which can cause more complex breakdowns. The most common cause of fan failure is the fan switch sensor. If all of the above devices are working properly, the reason the fan does not turn on will be the electronic control unit.

Replacing the fan switch sensor on the “ten”

Timely replacement of the VAZ 2110 fan switch sensor is carried out using an ordinary set of plumbing tools.

Replacement procedure:

  1. Drain the coolant from the radiator and disconnect the fan switch sensor.
  2. Remove the device from the radiator housing.
  3. Install a new device with a copper sealing ring.

Before installing the product, it is necessary to connect the terminals of a megger to the terminals of the output contact on the sensor for turning on the VAZ fan. This is how the functionality of the product is tested.

You can control the inclusion of a working product using heated water, where the sensor should be placed. In this case, the contact terminals of the device should close. At a temperature of about 95 degrees Celsius, the megohmmeter should show the resistance of the product, which will indicate the serviceability of the product.

    Every modern vehicle has a radiator cooling fan, which is controlled by a simple device - a fan switch sensor. Read all about these sensors, their existing types, design and operating principles, as well as about the correct selection and replacement in the proposed article.

    Today, the next article in the series “Crystal VAZs or typical breakdowns of domestic cars” is dedicated to the “classics”: VAZ-2101, 2103, 2104, 2104, 2105, 2106 and 2107. These cars have been driving along our roads for decades and, despite Despite all the shortcomings that we will talk about, their popularity is still high.

    In the series of articles “Crystal VAZs or typical breakdowns of domestic cars,” we will tell you about typical problems that occur when operating cars from the Volzhsky Automobile Plant. In this article we will talk about the VAZ-1111 (“Oka”) car.

    VAZ 2110 injector cooling fan does not turn on

    The radiator fan is one of the main elements of the engine cooling system. Its role is to force the radiator to flow when heating the coolant to a certain temperature.

    How does the fan turn on?

    Unlike carburetor engines, in VAZ 2110 injection engines the fan is turned on not directly from the temperature sensor, but through the electronic control unit (ECU). The sensor is installed on the outlet pipe of the cylinder head.

    VAZ 2110 injector cooling fan does not turn on: reasons, how to check

    When the coolant heats up to a temperature of 100-107 0 C, the sensor is triggered and sends a signal to the ECU, which processes it and sends it to the relay. The relay closes the circuit and supplies power to the fan drive (electric motor) through a fuse.

    Safety valve

    Knowing physics, you will agree that at normal atmospheric pressure, the water that is part of antifreeze boils at a temperature of 100 degrees Celsius.

    Old device

    If the VAZ 2110 cooling fan fuse, that is, the valve located on the expansion tank cap, turns out to be faulty, and there is atmospheric pressure inside it, the cooling liquid will boil, but the fan will not be able to start working even with a working electrical circuit. This is because the fan switching sensor on the injection VAZ 2110 has a switching temperature of more than 100 degrees Celsius.

    To fix this problem, replace the expansion tank cap. The new element must maintain the pressure inside the system above atmospheric pressure, which will allow the laws of physics to work, the boiling temperature to rise to 105 degrees Celsius and thereby turn on the blades of the unit.

    Reasons why the fan may not turn on

    Considering the described switching process, the reasons for the fan not working may be:

    • faulty temperature sensor;
    • faulty relay;
    • blown fuse;
    • electrical circuit break;
    • Problems with the electric fan drive.

    In addition, the expansion tank cap can also affect the timely activation of the fan. If it is faulty and its valve is not capable of maintaining pressure above atmospheric, the water, which is part of the coolant, will definitely boil at 100 0 C, and the sensor set to a higher temperature will not have time to operate.

    How to check the fan circuit

    1. We start the test with the simplest thing - determining the condition of the fuse. We are looking for it in the mounting block, which is located under the hood. Its marking is F7.

    2. We take it out, and visually, or using a multimeter, check for functionality. If it burns out, replace it with a new one (20 A). If everything is fine with him, we put him in his place and move on.

    3. In order not to waste time, it is better to immediately determine the functionality of the fan motor. To do this, disconnect the wires from it and connect it directly to the battery, observing the polarity. If the fan is “alive”, we continue to look for the cause.

    4. Move on to the fan relay. It is located in an additional mounting block in the car interior to the left of the front passenger's feet.

    VAZ 2110 cooling fan switching diagram

    To maintain the engine temperature, the VAZ 2110 cooling fan switching circuit is used. Switching the fan motor on and off is controlled automatically.

    Circuit diagram for switching on the cooling fan for a VAZ 2110 carburetor engine.

    The circuit diagram for switching on the cooling fan of the VAZ 2110 on carburetor and injection cars is different. On cars with a carburetor engine, a thermobimetallic sensor TM-108 is used for this, and on cars with an injection engine, control is carried out by a controller.

    When the fan is controlled by a sensor, the switching temperature depends on the sensor setting temperature, which is indicated on the housing. If the fan does not turn on when the temperature rises to the sensor response temperature, you must first check the serviceability of the sensor. To check, just close the contacts on the sensor and if it turns on, you need to change the sensor. If after closing the terminals the fan does not work, then the cooling fan switching circuit and the integrity of the fuse need to be checked.

    Circuit diagram for switching on the cooling fan for a VAZ 2110 injection engine.

    The circuit for switching on the cooling fan of a VAZ 2110 with an injection engine is powered by an electronic engine control controller. The response temperature in this case is set in the controller program and can be from 100 to 105 degrees. C. If the temperature sensor malfunctions, the error code P0115, P0116, P0117, P0118 is entered into the controller’s memory and the fan turns on while the engine is running.

    The fan does not turn on.

    But there are malfunctions in which the controller does not recognize the malfunction and the fan may not turn on when the temperature reaches above 105 degrees. C. In this case, to check the circuit and sensor, it is necessary to remove the connector from the temperature sensor while the engine is running. If the circuit is working properly and the sensor is malfunctioning, the fan will turn on and turn off when the connector is returned to its place.

    If the circuit malfunctions, it is necessary to check the integrity of the fuse, the serviceability of the relay and wires, according to the circuit. For a quick check, you need to bridge terminals 30 and 87 of the fan relay, located in the heater shaft on the passenger side. If the fan works, without removing the relay from the block, connect the case and pin 86 of the relay with a test lamp, the relay should work and the fan should turn on. In this case, the controller or the wire connecting the relay to pin 46 of the controller is faulty.

    If you do not hear the characteristic click of the relay turning on, and a positive signal is supplied from the main relay to pin 85 of the relay, and if there is a click and the fan does not turn on, change the relay. When installing a jumper between pins 30 and 87 does not turn on the fan, check the integrity of the fuse and the presence of power at the fan terminals. If there is power on one terminal and no power on the other, this indicates a possible malfunction of the fan motor.

    VAZ 2111 - antifreeze boils, the electric motor of the engine cooling system fan does not turn on, causes and solutions.
    A short guide to eliminating the cause of antifreeze boiling on a VAZ 2110 car. Instructions for replacing the cooling fan switch sensor.
    A malfunction of the engine cooling system can lead to engine overheating, so it is necessary to monitor the instrument readings. On cars of the VAZ-2110,2111,2112 family with electronic injection, the engine cooling system is slightly different. Let's look at the most common causes of antifreeze overheating, failure of the cooling system fan motor and methods for eliminating them.

    The fuse is damaged. A faulty fuse will be indicated by the absence of a sound signal, since the power supply to the sound signal and the cooling fan motor is carried out through one fuse. Remedy: Replace the fuse. The fuse is intact, but the electric motor of the cooling system fan does not turn on, so don’t despair and rush to disassemble anything. Remember, the electric motor of the cooling system fan in injection engines of the VAZ-2110 family turns on at an antifreeze temperature of +101 degrees Celsius. The switch-on sensor is LS0112, installed on the exhaust pipe of the engine; on carburetor engines, this sensor is installed in the radiator. To check the operating temperature, computer diagnostics are required, which is much cheaper than carrying out various unnecessary repairs.

    Malfunction of sensor LS0112, turning on the electric motor of the engine cooling system fan. A sensor malfunction, in addition to computer diagnostics, is determined as follows. It is necessary to turn on the ignition and remove the terminal from sensor LS0112. But this must be done at an antifreeze temperature of more than 101 degrees Celsius. If the fan works after removing the terminal, this will indicate the serviceability of the electric motor and damage to the LS0112 sensor. You should not remove the terminal while the engine is running, but this will help you avoid overheating of the antifreeze. At the same time, the on-board computer will remember this and display the CHECK ENGINE error.

    Replacing sensor LS0112. To collect antifreeze, place a container under the drain hole. Unscrew the radiator drain plug, then the conservator cap. There is no need to drain the antifreeze completely, 2-3 liters is enough. Next, using key 17, unscrew sensor LS0112. Installation of the sensor is carried out in the reverse order:

    1. Install the sensor
    2. Connect the terminals
    3. Fill with antifreeze (coolant)
    4. Warm up the engine
    5. Check the coolant level in the expansion tank and add if necessary. As mentioned earlier, the on-board computer, after replacing the sensor, may show a malfunction. To erase an error record from memory, you must disconnect the battery negative terminal for at least 10 seconds. The faults must be corrected. Have a nice ride.

    The fan does not turn on (VAZ-2111)

    Help! Is there a relay on 21114 to turn on the cooling fan, IF SO, WHERE IS IT LOCATED AND HOW TO CHECK IT? What is the principle of turning on the fan?

    The machine is boiling, but the fan does not turn on! The fan itself is working (connected directly)!

    What are your thoughts on this?

    July 22, 2011, 11:05 pm #2 + 1

    I’m not 100% sure, but there should be a leak, I would look in the mounting block and look at the fuses and maybe the temperature sensor itself is faulty.

    If the fan operates directly, then the relay and fuse should be normal. Check the temperature sensor.

    Of course there are control relays and fuses. There may be markings on the unit cover. If you checked by hammering in the contacts of the fan switch sensor, then your electrical part is working, with the exception of the fan switch itself. It is not a fact that the sensor itself is to blame. Sometimes the radiator cap or expansion tank is to blame. It does not maintain an excess above atmospheric pressure, and the engine boils before the sensor response temperature is reached. Perhaps the lid is simply not closed properly.

    To the people. Come on, you greedy guy, you go to the first electrician and you get 100-200 rubles with a working fan.

    Everything is very simple, on the mounting block, of course, there is a designation of the relays, it is also available on the Internet, as is the device and any circuit for any car, I personally looked for it.

    Most likely the sensor does not work. To replace it, you need to drain the antifreeze, buy a sensor, change it, fill it, etc.

    And so look at the fuse and relay, you don’t have to fool around with the random method, just go to an electrician and don’t buy possibly unnecessary sensors and relays.

    I had a similar story on my VAZ 21090, it turned out there was no plus with the relay, they threw the plus from the window regulators, “snot” (wiring, under the terminals). By the way, I recommend the forced trap, I had it for everyone, although I hardly used it

    With the engine running, disconnect the connector from the coolant temperature sensor, which is between the thermostat and the engine. The system goes into emergency mode and the controller gives a command to start the fan. If the fan does not start, first of all clean the contacts on the fan itself (a wire with a connection chip is connected to them), or better yet, replace it with new ones (this is a disease of 3-5 year old VAZs).

    My fan does not turn on at 100-107 degrees; the engine no longer heats up; the fan starts working, goes up to 99 degrees and stops. I don’t understand then why it doesn’t turn on when the engine is running without moving, well, there’s a traffic jam or a crossing, while driving the temperature is 85-90, the liquid is antifreeze, how to deal with it.

    Hello! VAZ 2112 (16 valves, 1.6, 2006) Yesterday, driving up to the garage, I looked at the engine temperature indicator on the dashboard and saw that the arrow was almost at the very edge of the red zone. Even though it's 0 degrees outside. The radiator fan did not work. While I was opening the garage doors, I turned off the car. During these couple of minutes, the temperature dropped by 15 degrees. But as soon as I started it, within a minute it rose again to the level of the red zone. I began to remember that the last time the fan worked was 2-3 weeks ago, while the days were still warm.

    How to check whether the fan is working or one of the temperature sensors is faulty (the one that is responsible for the temperature indicator on the instrument panel). Which relays and resistors are responsible for the operation of the fan motor, where are they located and how can they be checked for functionality with a tester? To my shame, I don’t know how to do this.

    Then it’s better not to do it yourself. Moreover, with the help of advice from friends (who have no idea about the principles of operation of this device) and a bottle of vodka. I saw a couple of cars in which they tried to start Carlson using scientific poking. In general, my brains were fried.
