Do-it-yourself noise insulation of the Priora engine compartment

Sound insulation on the Lada Priora is of interest to many car enthusiasts, for whom not only safety is important, but also comfort during travel. Being in a car that is treated with high-quality noise-insulating materials, the driver and passengers can enjoy every trip.

Street noise, the knock of worn suspension parts, the sound of a running engine and other factors affecting acoustic comfort become much less noticeable. But in order for the result to meet expectations, and the money not to be wasted, it is necessary to entrust the soundproofing of the Lada Priora to experienced craftsmen.

The desired effect can be achieved only with the proper experience, professional skills and abilities, as well as with the proper selection of materials. If you need a decent result, contact those.

Floor

The floor of a Lada Priora car requires effective sound insulation, since noise from the wheels, transmission, engine, etc. penetrates into the cabin through it. And when driving on country dirt roads and light off-road conditions, dry grass can touch the bottom, which is why a characteristic rustling sound can be heard in the cabin.

To prevent all this from causing discomfort during trips, we use multi-layer sound insulation of the floor. The elastic and elastic material STP Profi Plus is used for the first layer. STP BlackTon is used as the second (intermediate) layer, and STP NoiseBlock is the third.

This three-component structure guarantees excellent sound absorption quality. An STP Aero+ sheet, cut along a pre-marked contour, is secured under the rear seat cushion.

Task: installing sound insulation for a Lada Priora car in the “Gold” configuration

The first thing we decided to do for complete sound insulation was to cover the roof of the VAZ car. We carefully remove all unnecessary elements from the roof, including the sheathing on the roof of the vase. Now you can make the first layer of sound insulation on the car ceiling. We install a high-quality damper from SGM Alumast Alfa to neutralize vibration on the vase roof. How much work does this cost us? You yourself can guess by the appearance of the roof in the photo and the effect achieved. The roof of the Lada Priora is not only protected from vibrations, but has also become stiffer. The use of vibration on the roof significantly reduces the overall sound background in a hatchback car. Then you need to make another layer on the roof. For this purpose we use a thick layer of Violon WELL sound insulator. It eliminates unwanted sounds. After installing it, it is almost impossible to push through the roof of the car, and raindrops will definitely not cause any discomfort to anyone. After assembling the upper part of the interior and hatchback of the car, all we have to do is take on the lower part to achieve a similar effect.

Materials

There is no need to invent sound insulation or use building materials, even if their price is lower; today special sound insulation materials have been developed specifically for cars:

  • Vibration-absorbing materials (vibroplast, bimast) - serve to dampen body vibrations
  • Sound-absorbing materials (accent) - serve to dampen sound waves, their porous structure causes sound attenuation
  • Soundproofing materials (Splen) - completely reflect sound waves
  • Thermal insulating materials - maintain the temperature inside the car interior (here you don’t need to look for separate materials, sound absorbers and sound reflectors, they will additionally serve as insulation)
  • Anti-creaking materials (Bitoplast and Madeline) - to eliminate squeaks, crickets and rattling

Again, I haven’t posted anything for a long time, somehow I got a little lazy on D2... Although there is something to write about. We will replenish the BZ.

So, one evening at the end of August it suddenly dawned on me that summer was over, and I still hadn’t done the soundproofing of the engine partition, although all the time I thought that “in the summer I’ll change so many things”) So I quickly ran to disassemble front panel) I removed the steering wheel, radio, center console, moved the mounting block, unscrewed the screws securing the panel to the body, etc... The book on repair and operation helps a lot, and Google too, of course) Somehow with swearing and a little help brother pulled the dashboard out of the car, that was the end of the evening)

At home I covered the flow distributor and air ducts, and went over the joints with bitoplast.

Next days. Disconnecting the wiring, tearing off the poorly positioned standard vibration. I took a few photos so I wouldn't forget where everything went.

Then I degreased it with a solvent, heated it up and glued the Shumoff 4mm vibrator. I tried to cover everything I could get my hands on, because I understood that the effect, by and large, would not be very big. By the way, Shumoff was not enough for me, I had to add Vikar 3mm.

The doors will be covered with 3 layers of sound insulation; first, we carefully dismantle the door trims and prepare the surfaces for installation, namely, clean and degrease. We prepare the vibration insulation by heating it in a special oven. It is important to thoroughly clean the inside of the door from dirt and degrease, for a tighter and better fit of the material so that condensation does not occur. Shumoff M2 inside the door

There is time and there is noise and there is no need to go to work.

The holidays continue. My balcony is littered with sound insulation, everything there is: StP Silver, StP Aero, StP Accent Premium, I even have 2 sheets of Smartmat Comfort 8, I can’t stick them anywhere.

The doors are done, the trunk is done, the roof is done. All that remains is the floor and engine compartment. Both of these elements entail heavy disassembly of the car, which I am not prepared for. And there won’t be enough Shumka from my reserves, I’ll have to buy it. In general, it’s not fate. But I can work on the front arches and the engine shield a little. And even pouring rain won't stop me.

There are not enough photos, I will compensate with text.

So, visually everything is not bad. Carpet, everything.

I remove the sills, unscrew the carpet clips, bend it back, and look at the factory noise. And what do I see?

Swamp. On both sides, the factory sound insulation is thoroughly and wet everywhere. There are even micro-puddles under it. Tough. I was sad and tore off the factory Shumka. Wiped, cleaned, degreased. I glued vibration isolation. I glued from the seat fastenings to “as far as possible” under the panel.

And it was hell. If I were to rate the ease of applying sound insulation, the roof would be in first place, and the engine compartment in last place. Complex shape of metal, dirt, factory noise and FOAM. My car is 2009, maybe new ones don’t have it, but damn I have it. The driver and passenger have two pieces each, apparently this is how they level the floor. Maybe.

Actually, in the photo you can see that I glued the vibration and StP premium accent on top of it. Gluing the accent to the floor is stupid, so I only glued the front part. I began to think about what to do next. The thickness of the accent is 10 mm, my floor will turn out to be crooked. As a result, I remembered that I still have Smartmat Comfort 8. I bought it for the trunk, but then it was not useful. Fortunately, the manufacturer recommends applying it to the floor. With a feeling of relief I applied it in two layers. Oddly enough, it turned out to be the same height as the accent, although it would seem 10 mm versus 16 (2 layers of 8 mm each). Anyway.

The angles are strange, but in real life everything looked very decent, joint to joint and even on the same level.

I went for a ride. You can't hear the arches. The engine also seems to have become quieter. Why like? Yes, because I have a hatchback and you can only hear the TRUNK! The trunk lid just rattles like Satan's carriage! I only hear her!

Now I will struggle with the lid and some unfinished squeaks.

Expenses. Here I made extensive use of scraps and leftovers from the previous stages of Shumka. So everything is approximately. 1. Some scraps of StP Silver, 2mm and 3mm mixed. About three sheets. Conventionally, let there be 2 sheets of 2 mm and 1 sheet of 3 mm. 2x150+1x180=480 rub. 2. StP accent premium - finished off the trimmings and pinched off the whole sheet. Well, let it be 0.5 sheets (the accent sheets are hefty 0.7x1 m). 290x0.5=145 rub. 3. Smartmat Comfort 8 - two quarters on top of each other on the driver and front passenger sides. Just exactly 1 sheet. 1x330 rubles=330 rubles

Life hack - do-it-yourself soundproofing of a Priora car

The standard sound insulation of the Priora car leaves much to be desired. Car enthusiasts strive to correct this deficiency with their own hands, since extraneous sounds irritate and distract the Lada Priora while driving.

They make noise on the doors, floor, arches, ceiling, engine compartment, hood, trunk, panels, dashboard - after this the Priora becomes a quiet car. The source of extraneous sounds can be a malfunction of the engine, its components, malfunction of suspension parts, brake system, steering, etc. Unpleasant sounds occur when driving on gravel roads due to vehicles passing by, especially heavy vehicles. To get rid of unpleasant sensations, it is necessary to modify the standard sound insulation. You can do this yourself. Depending on the body type: hatchback, sedan, or station wagon, the Shumka technology is slightly different. Read the article to the end and we will tell you how to do it correctly!

It is necessary to purchase materials and acquire tools in advance.

Sound insulation of LADA Priora roof

The ceiling of the Lada Priora initially does not even have standard sound insulation, not counting the upholstery. Sound insulation of the Priora roof, as well as its other components, does not cause any particular difficulties. Therefore, every car owner who strives to reduce noise interference in the cabin of his car can perform it.

Before you begin installing sound insulation, you need to thoroughly prepare the working surface:

  • First, you need to remove the upholstery material from the car ceiling.

  • Secondly, the linings on the racks should be removed.

  • Thirdly, thoroughly degrease and clean the roof frame from dirt and dust, for example, with a solvent.

After the working surface has been treated with special products, it is recommended to wait some time for complete drying. At this point, you can start preparing all the necessary materials for sound insulation, namely:

  • Vibration-isolating material (STP or Shumoff);
  • Sound-absorbing material (BiPlast or Accent) – 2 sheets;
  • Thermal insulation material (Splen) – 2 sheets;
  • Technical hair dryer;
  • Construction scissors;
  • A hard iron or plastic roller.

The immediate work process of installing sound insulation can be divided into several stages. The first stage includes the installation of sheet vibration-proofing material, for example, STP or Shumoff. Since Priora sound insulation is carried out specifically on the roof, sheets must be used in large sizes. Therefore, cutting them will rarely be necessary.

After the material has acquired the desired shape and size, its bitumen base must be heated with a technical hair dryer. This will cause the surface of the vibration material to become sticky. Now you should attach the heated sheets of vibration isolator to the ceiling of the Priora and carefully roll them out with a hard iron or plastic roller.

The pasted surface at this stage will vary from 55 to 100%, depending on what material you prefer for sound insulation.

The second stage involves 100% covering of the Priora ceiling with sound-absorbing (Accent or BiPlast) or heat-insulating (Splen) material. Since these materials have a self-adhesive base, gluing them will be noticeably faster and easier.

At the third stage of installing roof sound insulation, sound insulation of the upholstery material of the ceiling and the plastic adjacent to it is carried out. Experts recommend gluing the inside of the sheathing with Bitoplast, as well as the plastic cladding of the racks. Thanks to simple steps, you will be able to get rid of unwanted squeaks and crickets in the car interior.

At the fourth final stage, the ceiling is assembled after sound insulation is reproduced. Installation of upholstery material is carried out in the reverse order. It is worth considering the fact that the thickness of the noise-insulating layers should not be too bulky, as this may complicate assembly. In addition, the clips will not be able to support all the material.

This DIY noise insulation of the Priora will not take you more than 3-4 hours. But the effect from it will be very significant. It will be especially noticeable during rain: the drumming will be practically inaudible inside the car. And the interior itself will conserve heat more efficiently.

Sound insulation of the Priora engine compartment is done independently

Priora soundproofing of the engine compartment, starting from the partition

Soundproofing a Priora is a process that does not require you to have car repair skills, so anyone can do it themselves in a matter of hours. You just need to know the necessary materials, tools and the procedure to perform the actions. You also need to be attentive; the resulting quality of sound insulation depends on your attentiveness when performing the work, and our instructions will help you deal with the rest. Lada Priora is today the newest model in the VAZ family, however, Priora, like other domestic car models, has such an inherent drawback - too high a noise level inside the cabin. The main source of this noise is, of course, the engine. To cope with this nuisance and make your car trips more comfortable, the solution would be comprehensive sound insulation for the Lada Priora engine compartment. When soundproofing the engine compartment, the following feature is taken into account - in order to achieve maximum effect, it is necessary to insulate the engine shield on both sides - both in the engine compartment and inside the cabin. To do this, you will have to remove the dashboard and disassemble everything that prevents you from gaining access to the shield.
