A car generator is a device that converts the mechanical energy of rotation of the engine crankshaft into electricity. The generator powers the vehicle's on-board network and recharges the battery after the engine starts.

During operation, generator breakdowns often occur. To solve problems, the 2110 generator is repaired or replaced. In both cases, the generator must be removed from the car. To do this you will need:

Signs of a generator malfunction

The generator on the VAZ 2110 has an average resource of about 80-100 thousand km, after which failures in its operation are possible. There can be many reasons for breakdowns: generator bearings, brushes, windings, etc.

As a result of malfunctions, a weak current is supplied to the on-board network. In this case, it is important to pay attention to the following signs:

These signs indicate that the generator is not capable of powering the on-board network; electricity is taken from the battery. It is also important to understand that when the generator fails or malfunctions, problems arise with charging the battery, as a result of which the battery quickly discharges.

Ultimately, the lack of spark at the spark plugs will cause the engine to stall. In such a situation, it is necessary to remove the generator, since after dismantling the device, you can disassemble the generator, check it, repair it (for example, replace the brushes) or completely replace it with a new or working device.

Where is the generator for 2110 located?

The VAZ 2110 generator is located in the engine compartment on the left side (located closer to the engine cooling radiator).

In terms of operation, the installation location is not the best, however, the location of the generator is quite convenient for servicing or removing the device. In practice, before dismantling, it is advisable to treat the generator mounting with a penetrating lubricant (such as WD-40).

How to remove the generator from a car:

  • Be sure to disconnect the terminals from the battery;
  • turn the car wheels to the right;
  • remove the engine crankcase protection (if there is one);
  • loosen the fastening nuts;
  • loosen the screw on the tension bracket;
  • by moving the generator towards the engine, loosen the belt tension;
  • remove the drive belt from the generator;
  • remove the wire coming from terminal “D”;
  • unscrew the nut securing the second wire “B+”, having first removed the rubber cap from it;
  • unscrew the tension screw;
  • unscrew the nut of the upper mounting of the generator and remove the tension bar;
  • unscrew the lower fastening nut and, holding the generator with your hand, remove the bolt and bushing;
  • take out the generator;

Generator replacement

If it is necessary to remove for repair or replace the 2110 generator, the replacement must be carried out on an inspection pit, lift or overpass. You can also jack up the front of the car and remove the wheel.

As for the tools, you will need to prepare:

  • set of wrenches;
  • spanners.

Also, always have penetrating lubricant and clean rags on hand. When removing the generator, especially if the 2110 generator is being repaired rather than replaced, try to prevent dirt, moisture, grease, technical fluids, etc. from getting inside the device.

The device is replaced as follows:

  • drive the car into a pit or lift it on a lift;
  • You need to remove the “negative” terminal from the battery (to unscrew the terminal you need a wrench 10);
  • remove the right front wheel from the car;
  • unscrew the crankcase protection fasteners (if equipped) and the boot;
  • Next, in the engine compartment of the car, you need to disconnect the wire connector from the terminal (unscrew the nut holding the terminals);
  • the main task is to remove the “positive” terminal by moving the rubber cover to the side;
  • Having disconnected all contacts, you need to loosen the upper and lower bolts securing the generator using a 13mm wrench;
  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the adjusting bolt, thereby releasing the tension on the generator belt and remove the belt (then the bolt can be unscrewed completely and then removed);

  • the generator mounting bolts can now be completely unscrewed with a 13mm wrench (if the bolt cannot be removed from the generator, you can try to carefully knock it out with a hammer),
  • normally the top mount and tension bar are removed;
  • if difficulties arise, you need to go down under the car and unscrew the bolt nut, pull the bolt out of the hole;
  • Next, the generator needs to be lifted, after which the generator can be completely removed from the car;

By removing the generator on the 2110, you can troubleshoot the device, repair it, or completely replace it. Having prepared the generator, installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.

I would like to warn you right away that in this example of my VAZ 2110, the generator is slightly clamped by the mounting bracket, since it broke off during the accident, so I cannot show you the removal procedure in all its details. After this, move the generator back (towards the car interior) and remove the belt from the pulleys. Now you can disconnect all power wires. One “bundle” is secured with a stud and nut, and another plug is simply fixed with a connector:

Then you can unscrew the lower nut securing the generator, first crawl under the car and remove the engine protection (if installed):

Usually the bolt fits tightly, so it can be knocked out carefully and without excessive force with the handle of a hammer:

Next, unscrew the tensioner nut from top to bottom and you can carefully move the VAZ 2110 generator to the side in order to remove it later:

If you are replacing the complete device, install it in the reverse order. But please note that the generator model, if possible, should be the same as the one installed by the factory. That is, first of all, look at the applicability specifically to your car, and then at the current rating in Amperes.

As for the price of generators for VAZ 2110-2112, it may vary depending on the type and manufacturer. But if you take the KZATE model, which in most cases is installed by the factory, then the cost can be about 3,500 rubles. Although, Chinese options can be obtained at almost half the price. Tensioning the VAZ 21124 alternator belt

The most important indicator for assessing the correct operation of a belt drive is the degree of belt tension. The engine crankshaft rotates at a speed of several thousand revolutions per minute.

In this case, sharp decreases or increases in rotation speed often occur. In such conditions, the belt drive must fit very tightly to the working surface of the pulley, providing good traction.

If the VAZ 2112 generator belt whistles, then with a high degree of confidence we can say that the belt is not tensioned enough. When the rotation speed changes, the pulley rotates and the belt slides along its surface, producing a characteristic sound. In addition to the unpleasant squeaking sound, you must be prepared for the fact that the belt quickly overheats and may fail.

A highly tensioned VAZ 21124 alternator belt can also lead to various breakdowns, the most common of which are:

  • wear and failure of generator bearings;
  • belt rupture;
  • bracket bending.

To check the correct tension of the belt, press it in the middle between the pulleys. With a force of 10 kgf, the subsidence should be 10-15 mm.

The tension is adjusted using ordinary wrenches, for which you should loosen the nuts securing the generator to the bracket, adjust the tension using the adjusting bolt and tighten the fastening lugs again.

Replacing the VAZ 2112 alternator belt in the garage with your own hands

As much as we wouldn’t like it, most of the machine’s parts have their own service life, after which they need to be replaced.

A VAZ 2112 alternator belt, provided it is of high quality and careful operation, can provide a mileage of over 100 thousand km, but it is better to replace it without tempting fate after it has served the period specified by the manufacturer.

Replacing the 2112 alternator belt is done in the following order:

  • the car is installed on a viewing hole, since access from below to the belt is more convenient;
  • after disconnecting the battery, the upper and lower nuts securing the generator are loosened;
  • the adjusting bolt is unscrewed and the generator moves to the engine block;
  • remove the old one and put on a new alternator belt.

The belt is tensioned as described above. Considering that a new belt is being installed, after a short period of use, it may stretch slightly and the tension will weaken. This can be eliminated by additionally tightening the generator drive belt to the parameters set by the manufacturer.

The generator of any car is driven by a crankshaft pulley. The diameter of this pulley will be 2-3 times larger than the diameter of the generator pulley. Therefore, the rotor in the generator rotates at high speed. If we talk about VAZ-21124 and 21120 engines, one generator can work together with them - 2112-3701010.
