How to change the oil in a Lada Xray with your own hands?

Let's start with the preparatory stage. To change the oil you will need:

- Flushing, oil filter and 4.5 l oil.
- Five liter bucket.
- A screwdriver or awl to pierce the filter.
So, we got ready, bought oil, an oil filter, put on unnecessary or work clothes and went to change the oil on our Lada Xray.
First of all, if you don’t know what kind of oil is currently in your engine, or you want to replace the existing one with a different brand, you will need to flush the engine so as not to mix the two products, because it is unknown what reaction they will have when interacting. So, unscrew the oil sump cap and fill in the flush, close the cap, then proceed according to the instructions on the label, as a rule, you will need to start the engine with the flush inside and let it run for 7-10 minutes.
After the engine of our Lada has been washed, we unscrew the cap again and raise our car or go down into the pit. Now we take the key to 10 in order to remove the engine protection, which must be installed on every car. Many manufacturers have already provided holes in the engine protection and made changing the oil more convenient, but our auto industry has not yet come to this. In order to remove the protection you need to unscrew 6 bolts, this will take you no more than 15 minutes.
After we have opened the space under the protection, we take a key with a 15mm head, put on rubber gloves and, placing a bucket, unscrew the drain plug, which we have highlighted in red in the picture. Used oil begins to flow out intensively along with flushing.
While the oil is flowing out, take care of the oil filter; you need to carefully unscrew it; as a rule, this is not so easy to do because at the factory the oil filter is installed automatically and most likely it is screwed in with greater force than human force. To make it easier to dismantle the filter, pierce it, but be careful, oil will also leak from it.
After you have changed the filter, all the old oil has left your car - tighten the plug, return the crankcase protection to its place and lower the Lada Xray from heaven to earth.

This Lada X Ray engine is very different from other VAZ engines. The design of the power unit used a new throttle valve, devoid of a mechanical drive, the cylinder head was equipped with new valves (light weight) from Mahle, and additional oil passages were fed to the phase regulator.

This is the most powerful engine in the VAZ line, developing up to 122 hp. (90 kW) at 6050 rpm. and characterized by a number of significant innovations that also affected the lubrication system. So, here for the first time, not a native VAZ one, but an imported South Korean GMB oil pump was installed, which produces not the usual 33-37, but as much as 55-62 l/min at 6000 rpm.
The pump body is cast not from cast iron, but from a light aluminum alloy. The cross-sectional area of the oil receiver has been increased, and the volume of the oil sump has also been increased to 4.4 liters. versus 3.2 l. the engine has 1.6.
Problems during the test drive
Despite all the advantages of the VAZ 21179 engine, problems are still discovered during its operation. First of all, this is the “maslozhor” that has already become traditional for the latest VAZ engines. On a specimen subjected to a test drive, over six months of intensive use in different road conditions with a mileage of 40,000 km, in addition to the oil burn, other malfunctions of the oil system were revealed.

· fuel consumption has increased.
Here we will make a reservation that testing was deliberately carried out in a mode as close as possible to reality.
1. We used motor oil purchased on the market from random sellers, with the dubious packaging indicating the viscosity of 10W40 (it seems to be semi-synthetic, we do not mention brand names to avoid anti-advertising).
2. The replacement interval was also increased and amounted to about 15,000 km.
3. The same can be said about the quality of gasoline: we refueled at the first gas stations we came across, both in the city and in the regional outback.
Thus, the result of the problems that arose was quite natural, once again confirming the correctness of the factory instructions, according to which the VAZ 21179 engine is very sensitive to the quality of fuels and lubricants.
If the car has high mileage
Many new cars have appeared in Russia, but in rural areas and small towns there are still many Lada cars that are no longer produced. They will be traveling on our roads for a long time, thanks to the availability of spare parts in stores, for example, here, and their convenient repair. Many owners of such cars are wondering what kind of lubricant to pour into an old engine.
For Russian car engines, a mileage of 100,000 km or more is already significant. For foreign-made vehicles, it is considered significant if the car has covered a distance of over 200,000 km.
