Classification of oils
Oils are classified according to:
- type;
- viscosity;
- season;
- API criteria;
- ILSAC methodology.
There are 4 types of motor lubricant;
- mineral;
- hydrocracking;
- semi-synthetic;
- synthetic.
Viscosity is designated by grade according to the SAE system. The lower it is, the more liquid and suitable it will be for the cold season.
The seasonal classification includes:
- winter oils, which are designated by a number followed by the letter W, for example 5W;
- summer products identified only by viscosity number, for example 30;
- all-season lubricants with combined markings, for example 5W-30.
Labeling according to criteria developed by API reflects:
- applicability of the composition in a particular type of engine (products containing the letter S in their code are suitable for gasoline engines);
- performance qualities (the closer the letter is to the end of the alphabet, the higher the category the oil corresponds to).
The ILSAC methodology involves almost identical methods for assessing lubrication.
The composition class is indicated by the abbreviation GF followed by a number.
The higher it is, the better the product. Since May 2021, the GF-6 standard has come into force (corresponds to the SP marking according to the API).
Classification of motor oils
The manufacturer's recommendations do not regulate the type of oil applicable to the "Seven" engine. Mineral, synthetic and semi-synthetic oil can be poured into the engine if it meets the quality requirements.
Motor oil canisters are marked (for example, “API SJ” or “API SG/CD”), which informs about the quality of the product. When choosing oil, this is what you should pay attention to.
The abbreviation API (American Petroleum Institute) stands for American Petroleum Institute. This is an American non-governmental organization that provides regulation of issues related to the gas and oil industries. One of the areas of API's work is the development of standards and recommended practices for the oil and gas industry.
Motor oil is standardized according to the following indicators:
- toxicity;
- washing ability;
- corrosive activity;
- effectiveness of protecting parts from friction;
- the amount of deposits remaining on parts over the period of operation;
- temperature characteristics.
The letters “S” and “C” mean that the oil is intended for gasoline or diesel engines.
The letter after "S" or "C" indicates the quality of the engine oil's performance characteristics. The markings are in alphabetical order. The further the letter is from “A”, the better the characteristics of the oil.
Oil suitable for VAZ 2107 is minimum “API SG/CD”.
Note: the SAE methodology (type “5W40” qualifies oil only by viscosity indicators. This classification does not take into account performance characteristics and quality.
What kind of engine oil to fill in the VAZ 2107 engine injector
Any oil is suitable in terms of viscosity - from 5W-30 to 15W40.
The choice should be made based on climatic operating conditions and the age of the car:
- the colder it is, the lower the viscosity grade;
- the older the car, the more viscous the product required by the motor.
The choice of API class depends on the year of manufacture. The manufacturer's recommendations are given in the table. When choosing, you need to take into account that a lubricant of a higher category can be used instead of an oil with worse performance. Reverse replacement is not permitted.
Year of manufacture VAZ 2107 injector | API mixture class |
2005 | SH |
2006 | S.J. |
2007-2010 | SL |
2011-2013 | S.M. |
The following brands are recommended for the “seven”:
- "Lukoil Lux";
- Esso;
- "Novoil-Sint";
- Rosneft;
- "Norsea Extra";
- G-Energy;
- Mobil;
- Shell Helix Super.
It is believed that completely synthetic compounds have the best performance properties. But they are the most expensive. A good option would be to replace it with semi-synthetic products.
Elimination of illiteracy
If you are interested in what kind of oil the engineers of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant recommend to fill into the power units of classic Lada cars - mineral, semi-synthetic or synthetic, then you are formulating the question incorrectly. The manufacturer's recommendations relate only to the quality standards that the engine oil being poured must meet.
Many people notice that product canisters usually have markings like API SH or API SJ/CF. You should pay attention to it first of all, since it is this marking that informs about the quality of the product.
API is an acronym for the American Petroleum Institute. This institute checks whether motor oil meets certain quality standards based on a large number of indicators, including:
- the amount of deposits remaining on engine parts after a standard period of operation;
- washing ability;
- temperature characteristics;
- toxicity;
- corrosivity;
- effectiveness of protecting engine parts from friction.
The abbreviations SJ or CF are deciphered as follows.
- S and C are the categories of engines for which the oil is intended. Lubricants for gasoline power units are designated by the letter S, and lubricants for diesel engines by the letter C.
- J and F – quality of oil performance characteristics. The farther the letter is from A in alphabetical order, the higher the product characteristics.
Engineers at the Volzhsky Automobile Plant require that the engine of the VAZ 21074 injector be filled with lubricant that at least meets the API SG/CD standard. Moreover, if you come across a product that meets the API SH, SJ or SL standard, then it is better to fill it.
Quite often, when purchasing motor oil, car enthusiasts first of all pay attention to the classification of the product according to the methodology of the US Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). However, such a classification only determines the viscosity characteristics of the product and does not inform in any way about its quality.
Recommended VAZ 2107 oils according to SAE classification:
- Lukoil Lux – 5W40, 10W40, 15W40.
- Lukoil Super - 5W30, 5W40, 10W40, 15W40.

What kind of oil should I put in the box of a VAZ 2107?
Often, owners of classic Zhiguli cars are interested in what kind of oil to pour into the VAZ 2107 gearbox in order to extend the operating time of the gears. According to the recommendation of AvtoVAZ, transmission oil should belong to the GL-4 or GL-5 group with a viscosity class of SAE75W9 (summer), SAE75W85 (demi-season) or SAE80W85 (winter).
It is recommended to change transmission oil in domestically produced cars once every six months: taking into account the climate in the region and the condition of Russian roads, this frequency seems to be the most optimal.
What kind of oil should I put in the box for VAZ 2101-VAZ 2107?
Welcome! What kind of oil should be poured into the gearbox on the “Classic”? How much oil is included in the box? We are asked these questions very often, but not all people usually know the answer to them, and therefore, especially for such people, we will cover these questions in more detail in the article.
What kind of oil should be poured into the box?
If we talk about cars of the “Classic” family with 4 and 5-speed gearboxes, then only special transmission oil is poured into it, which will lubricate all the gears that are in the boxes during their operation.
From what we read above, we understood that only transmission oil is poured into the box, and what is the viscosity class of this oil and what group should it be, you ask? For classics, the oil group should be either “GL-4” or “GL-5”. And the viscosity grade should be designated “SAE75W90”, or “SAE75W85”, or “SAE80W85”.
What do all these symbols mean and where are they located?
These designations are usually written on the boxes in which the oil is located, and they mean the viscosity class of this oil and the group to which this or that oil belongs, let’s look at it in more detail:
GL-4 - these oils contain a high content of additives. Basically, this type is used only on cars with step transmissions, which operate at high speeds but with low torque, and also at low speeds but with high torque.
GL-5 - these oils are created for use in “Hypoid gears are gears in which two gears rotate at an angle, see the photo below for an example of such a gear.” At the moment, on classics, the hypoid gear is located only in the gearbox and therefore, as you already understood, only oils of the “GL-5” group must be filled into the gearbox. But this group of oils has also found its application in gearboxes, but basically this group is used only for gearboxes that constantly operate under difficult operating conditions.
SAE75W90 is, as such, an oil viscosity class, and this abbreviation means that the oil is semi-synthetic or simply synthetic; such oil is also commonly called all-season oil, because if you look at the numbers at which the oil either freezes or boils, then these numbers come out beyond +35 and -40, in this regard, such oil can be used on cars that are used in Russia, because such a climate is considered practically the norm for our country.
SAE75W85 - this viscosity class is also used for so-called all-season oils, and the temperature at which the oil will solidify goes beyond -40 and should not exceed +45, otherwise the oil may boil.
SAE80W85 – and the last type of oil viscosity, 80W-85, which boils at degrees above +35 and does not freeze down to -30 degrees.
How much oil is included in the box on a classic?
Many people are accustomed to asking this question in exactly this form, but in fact this is an incorrectly posed question, because the oil is located in the transmission crankcase as such, and therefore it would be correct to ask your question this way: “How much transmission oil will go into the box crankcase? »
In fact, this is not so important, the essence remains the same anyway, so let’s move closer to the answer to the question posed, and it will sound exactly like this: If a 4-speed gearbox is installed on a car, then only 1 .35 liters of transmission oil, and if the gearbox is 5-speed, then all 1.6 liters!

Which oil to choose for VAZ-2107
Transmission oils
How much oil do I need?
Oil used to lubricate internal combustion engines operates under very difficult conditions. Multi-ton loads, high pressure, aggressive vapors of various liquids, temperature changes - all this affects the oil and changes its properties. Therefore, even the most modern motor oils have a limited service life. The VAZ instructions determine the oil change period at 10,000 km or 6 months. It depends on what comes first. It is not advisable to deviate from this deadline. During this mileage, the oil absorbs a huge amount of contaminants, and additives lose their properties. This black slurry looks more like paint than oil and, with its entire appearance, says “replace me.” The oils poured into the gearbox and rear axle housing have a slightly different composition and properties. It is more important for them to have high lubricating properties and the ability to withstand high specific loads. Therefore, such oils, and they are called transmission oils, have a higher viscosity - 75W90, 80W90 according to SAE. According to the instructions, they are supposed to be changed after 60,000 km. The same oil is filled into the steering gear housing; it is not recommended to change it, but it is better to play it safe and fill it with fresh oil.
Which oil to choose for VAZ-2107
For motor oil , the first thing to consider is the vehicle's total mileage . If it is not very large (less than 60,000 km), we choose a lower viscosity 5W30, 10W30 according to SAE. “Older” engines, with wear close to the limit, require high-viscosity oil 15W40, 20W40. Also, different companies have brands for worn-out engines. They contain special additives that increase compression, reduce noise, and reduce oil consumption. Why not pour such oils into all engines? Because, due to their high viscosity, they are more difficult to pump through channels, gaps and holes with an oil pump, leading to energy losses. As a result, fuel consumption increases and power decreases, not by much, but it increases. Owners of worn-out VAZ-2107 have to put up with this, so they “pay” for deferring major repairs.
Today oils of three main compositions are produced and sold: -mineral; -semi-synthetic; -synthetic. In addition, in each of these groups there are brands “simpler and cheaper” and “cooler and more expensive”. Their properties can differ greatly. Therefore, when buying a used Seven, ask the previous owner what kind of oil he used and try to stick to the same brand and quality. After all, if you suddenly change the quality of the oil, you can “kill” the engine. How? And here it is: the previous owner filled it with inexpensive “semi-synthetic” oil, and you decided to please your “swallow” with expensive branded synthetic oil. Before adding fresh oil, the engine was washed, and fresh, expensive oil has much more effective cleaning properties. All accumulated deposits were washed away, the gaps in the joints increased, the pressure decreased sharply and the engine “knocked”. But if you filled in expensive oil, and you don’t want to spend that kind of money, then you can safely fill in cheaper oil. It is only desirable to have the same composition and viscosity.

The second selection condition is the place of residence of the car
Although the oils are all-season, differences in the climatic conditions of the Krasnodar Territory and Vorkuta (for example) force an adjustment to be made for the viscosity of the oil being poured. Cold climate 0W30, 5W30, warm climate 5W40, 10W40. If all conditions are met and there are no “contraindications”, then synthetic oil is the best that is on the market. “Mineral water” and “semi-synthetic” manage to compete with it only because of their low price.
Choose a manufacturer so as not to end up with a fake. It is best to purchase oil in branded stores. The same goes for the oil filter.
Transmission oils
Everything is simpler here; if the oil seals and gaskets are in good condition, then it is better to fill in with synthetic gear oil. With it, in the cold season the car drives easier and consumes less fuel.
How much oil do I need?
Engine lubrication system – 3.75 l; Gearbox housing – 1.35 l; Rear axle housing – 1.3 l; Steering gear housing - 0.215 l
How to determine the oil change period
If the VAZ 2107 is equipped with a pressure sensor on the dashboard, then the driver will know when it is necessary to replace it. Typically, the indicator will turn red when the oil level is extremely low. Also, special attention should be paid to its pressure at different temperature ranges of engine operation.
When the lubricant begins to decompose during prolonged operation or starting the engine, the pressure indicator on the dial exceeds the permissible mark. It usually decomposes due to liquefaction and boiling in the crankcase of the internal combustion engine system.
If your car does not have a pressure sensor, you must use the recommendations of VAZ engineers. They advise replacing the lubricant in the engine after reaching 6,000 km when driving short distances or after 10,000 km when driving long distances.
Tips for choosing oil
AvtoVAZ engineers recommend using lubricants for 2107 power units that at least meet API SG/GD standards. However, if the owner of the seven comes across oil that meets the API classification SL, SH, SJ, then it is better to use such lubricants.
Very often, when choosing, Seven owners pay attention to the classification of oil and its viscosity index. While viscosity indicates the temperature conditions at which it can be used, the SAE classification does not indicate the quality of the product. Therefore, when choosing a lubricant, pay attention to the characteristics and properties indicated on the canister.
Motor oils recommended for filling into the VAZ 2107 engine:
How to determine when it's time to change the oil
The lubricant in the engine needs to be updated every 15 thousand km, in the bridge - after a maximum of 40 thousand km. These recommendations are given in the owner's manual that the factory supplied with the vehicle. But they are designed taking into account the fact that at least half of the time the car will be driving on the highway. If the driver uses it only in the city and the engine constantly operates in “start-stop” mode, the specified time frame needs to be reduced by 1.5-2 times.
You can understand that it’s time to update the oil, although it has not yet reached its standard service life, by reading the pressure sensor. If they rise during a cold start and drop sharply after warming up, this is a signal that the lubricant has lost its properties.
What type of oil to pour into the VAZ 2107
If we talk about what kind of oil to pour into the VAZ 2107 , “synthetic”, “mineral water” or “semi-synthetic”, then synthetic oil is most suitable for the “seven”. As a compromise - semi-synthetic.
Synthetic oils are synthesized from different chemicals and have greater fluidity at low temperatures. This type of oil is insensitive to overheating and is more stable from a chemical point of view. Accordingly, the service life of “synthetics” is much longer than that of “mineral water”.
Semi-synthetic oil is a compromise between the quality of synthetic oil and the price of mineral oil. It is suitable for use in summer or in warm winter conditions. In severe frosts, it is better to use synthetic oil.
Thanks to additives, semi-synthetic and synthetic oils have advanced lubricating properties and significantly slow down engine wear.
Changing engine oil on a VAZ 2107
Changing the engine oil in a carburetor-type VAZ 2107 engine should be carried out regularly. It is believed that it is necessary to fill in a new one every 10 thousand km so that the engine runs smoothly. There is no need to contact a service center, because doing it yourself is easy and simple: you just need to purchase an oil filter, the oil itself, and you can get to work. For your convenience, it is advisable to have a hole in the garage so that you can see everything comfortably and clearly.
- Difficult choice
- Product quantity
- How is the replacement made?
Difficult choice
Please note that it does not matter what kind of engine you have in your VAZ 2107: carburetor or injector. Engine oil can be replaced by any type:
— synthetic (product of chemical synthesis);
— semi-synthetic (a mixture of synthetic and mineral oils);
— mineral (fuel distillation product).
Synthetic motor oil is considered the most advanced, as it practically does not oxidize and has excellent viscosity, which contributes to lower fuel consumption. It can be used at any time of the year, because even in winter it does not thicken much. Its only disadvantage is its high price compared to other types of oils.
Semi-synthetic is a cross between the other two types, containing approximately 40% synthetic and 60% mineral. Of course, it has a higher viscosity, but its price is much lower than that of pure synthetic.
Mineral is very susceptible to oxidation, its chemical properties are unstable, and at very low temperatures such a product can freeze. It is replaced quite often. After how many thousand kilometers it needs to be changed, if the engine has a carburetor, it’s up to you to decide. Naturally, it has a very low cost.
So, take your pick based on your budget and preferences. In any case, if the car's performance bothers you, you can try a different type of oil.
Product quantity
Buy motor oil only in specialized stores for car enthusiasts, otherwise you risk spending your money on a low-quality fake, which will have a very negative impact on the operation of the car’s engine. In this case, you need to know how many liters you need to use.
The VAZ 2107 engine, type injector and carburetor, holds about 4 liters (according to experienced car enthusiasts, approximately 3.75 liters). No one can say exactly how much it will be consumed by the machine, since leaks are always possible. That is why it is necessary to have a couple of liters in reserve so as not to get into an unforeseen situation.
How is the replacement made?
Having decided on the type and brand of the product, you can replace it. You don't need anything special for this. Prepare a 12 mm hexagon, a screwdriver, and a reservoir for the old product. On engines, the carburetor and injector change the oil in the same way.
Before starting work, the VAZ 2107 engine should be warmed up well to about 70 degrees and turned off.
Place a container for old oil and unscrew the drain plug of the engine sump using a hexagon.
Unscrew the filter. This is very easy to do, so you may not need a screwdriver or wrench. Check the carburetor for traces of oil.
Now you just have to wait until it drains completely. After this, close the tray with a stopper.
You can begin to install a new filter, the replacement of which is also necessary. Please note that first you need to pour a small amount of oil into the VAZ 2107 filter, only then put it in place, which should be wiped with a clean cloth.
Screw the filter in by hand. It won't be difficult. After this, you can pour oil into the engine. Unscrew the filler cap and fill it. Be careful not to do this until the MAX mark. Its level should be a few millimeters from it.
After the above steps, the VAZ 2107 must be started so that it can run for about 5 minutes. Now turn off the engine, check the oil level, filter, and plug fastening. This is necessary in order to identify a possible leak in time. The replacement is completed, the car is ready for use.
If something bothers you, tighten the cap tightly and fill in as much product as needed.
Having learned to carry out this type of work yourself, it will not be difficult for you to change other necessary consumables, which will significantly save your budget.
Engine oil for seven
At first, the VAZ 2107 was produced with a carburetor engine. Since 2000, the car began to be equipped with an injection engine. The engine size remains the same. In order for the “seven” to work as long as possible, it is necessary to fill the engine with only high-quality oil with certain characteristics. Some types of lubricants that can be used in the VAZ 2107 are indicated in the service book.
Which oil is suitable for the “seven”
For the VAZ 2107, it is best to use synthetic compounds; semi-synthetic ones can be a compromise solution.
Synthetics are made from chemicals. The properties of the oil are characterized by high fluidity when the temperature drops to sub-zero values. Synthetic products are not afraid of engine overheating; their properties remain unchanged. Therefore, synthetic oils last much longer than mineral oil.
If we talk about semi-synthetics, it is necessary to keep in mind that it is in the middle between cost and quality characteristics. It is good to use in the summer. For severe frosts it is better to use synthetic products.
Special additives included in synthetics and semi-synthetics give the oil high quality and prevent increased wear of internal combustion engine components.
Brands of oils suitable for use in the VAZ 2107:
- Lukoil Lux;
- Lukoil Super;
- Novoil-Sint;
- Norsi Extra;
- Esso;
- Shell Helix Super.
The degree of viscosity is selected individually, in accordance with operating conditions.
When is it necessary to replace
A pressure sensor is installed in almost every car. Based on its readings, you can determine when the oil change is due. Over time, the lubricant begins to thin out. When the engine is still cold, the pressure begins to rise; after warming up, it drops.
You can also take note of the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations. If the car is used in urban mode, it is better to change the lubricant after 6000 km. For regular long-distance trips, the replacement period can be increased to 10,000 km.
The volume of oil required for normal operation of the S7 engine
The service book indicates that the volume of motor oil together with the filter reaches 3.75 liters. Therefore, it is enough to purchase a 4-liter container to completely fill the system, and top up if necessary.
A few recommendations from professionals
It is advisable to replace the lubricant with the same brand. If the type of oil is completely different, for example mineral water is changed to synthetic, you must first drain the old oil, flush the system and only then fill in new fluid.
To extend the life of a high-mileage engine, you do not need to use modern synthetics. It contains special detergent additives that can remove deposits that cover microcracks formed during engine operation.
A new engine should only operate on synthetic lubricant. It will protect the motor from overheating and extend its service life. After the break-in is completed, it is necessary to drain the factory oil, flush the engine system and fill with synthetics.
If you want your “seven” to work for a very long time, replace it according to the car manufacturer’s recommendations. The brand of oil must correspond to operating conditions, engine condition and, of course, financial capabilities.
Which oil is better: semi-synthetic or synthetic
In motorist circles, disputes often arise: which oil is better, semi-synthetic or synthetic. Some argue that it is enough to find a good semi-synthetic and change it a little more often than required by the regulations.
Others are categorically convinced that nothing other than synthetics should be poured into new high-tech engines. In fact, both sides are partly right.
There are a lot of variables in this equation. And there is simply no clear answer to the question of which oil is better. Below we will try to understand in more detail what each class of motor oil is and for what purpose it is best suited.
Separation by database type according to API classification
The determining factor which type of oil belongs to (synthetic, semi-synthetic or mineral) is the base. The American Petroleum Institute has introduced its own system for classifying base oils. It consists of 5 classes.
