The history of the plant’s promising flagship car began in the era of Vladimir Kadannikov. Initially, they planned, together with General Motors Corporation, to create a class D car (VAZ-3116/3117 according to internal factory designations), but it was decided to create a car of the potentially more popular class C+, smaller in size than class D, but larger than traditional AvtoVAZ models and having more powerful engine. Sketches of the project appeared in 2004. The first full-scale result of the work was a model of the VAZ-2116 Silhouette, first exhibited at the Moscow Motor Show in 2004.
An exhibition copy was assembled in 2005. The production of experimental samples began in 2006. The first series of VAZ-2116 - 23 bodies and 19 prototypes. The second series consists of 12 bodies, of which 9 are prototypes. The assembled prototype was shown at the 2006 Moscow Motor Show, but this car was only a development of the main technological solutions of the new platform. The prototype did not have a well-developed interior (many elements were taken from foreign analogues), or even a significant exterior. The prototype of the “zero” series only tested the basic solutions of the new platform.
Later, at the Interauto-2007 exhibition, a new prototype of the 100A series was presented. It already had an original interior and a more elaborate exterior. A lot of work has been done on the car over the past year. For example, the aerodynamic drag coefficient Cx in the project was 0.32. On real machines it turned out to be 0.36, but was subsequently reduced to 0.33. For the first time, such elements as radiator pre-chambers and a dual-flow muffler appeared on cars from the Volga plant.
On December 22, 2006, a framework agreement was signed between the state corporation Russian Technologies and the Canadian company Magna International on cooperation in the production of auto components for the new project C.
In 2009, cooperation with the Canadian company Magna International was frozen in favor of the Franco-Japanese Renault Nissan Alliance; the French company Renault acquired a 25% stake in AvtoVAZ. The Alliance provided its B platforms, which in 2012 were installed on the first line of the AVTOVAZ main conveyor. The head of the Russian Technologies company, Sergei Chemezov, said that the developments with Magna International remain valid and will be used to create new cars.
